Dominic West: My opening night in the West End was for my mum

Updated 10:08am on 14 Oct 2009

Just two weeks ago, the mother of The Wire star Dominic West died after a battle against leukaemia.

Last night, he overcame his grief to take the stage on the opening night of his West End stage show that he had hoped she would see.

West had abandoned rehearsals of Life Is A Dream to rush to his home town of Sheffield to see his mother, Moya, before she passed away. He returned after one day.

Mrs West, 75, and mother of seven, was a keen amateur performer. West said: “My mum got me involved in acting so I was thinking of her. Every bit of theatre I've done was to please her.

“I was desperate for her to see this and this was for her tonight. It really helped me not worry about press night nerves. I felt she was here.”

West said it was “fantastic” to be back on stage in London, because “this is where I feel at home”.
