Chart topper: Alexandra Burke

X Factor winner Alexandra Burke has stormed to the top of the charts with her single Bad Boys, beating Robbie Williams' comeback single Bodies.

Both acts kicked off their chart campaigns with appearances on The X Factor last weekend.

It emerged in midweek that Burke's track, which features US rap superstar Flo Rida, was selling about double that of Williams.

Her version of Hallelujah - released on the back of her reality show win - became the best-selling single of 2008.

She said: "I'm blown away by the success of the single. I've been recording my album for the last six months, so I'm hugely excited to finally be sharing my music with everyone.

"I want to say a big thank you for all the support I'm receiving, I'm one very happy girl today."

HMV's Gennaro Castaldo said: "Alexandra Burke's success in having the fastest-selling single of the year, and, in the process, fending off the mighty challenge of Robbie on his return, shows that her fan base has not only stayed with her, but is growing as she connects with a wider audience.

"It's fair to say that Alexandra is now firmly established as one of our leading female artists, and this second number one in her career also creates a tremendous platform for her debut album to be among the biggest sellers this Christmas."

Her debut album, Overcome, is released today.
Last week's number one single, Oopsy Daisy by Chipmunk, the north London-born rapper, slipped to number three, The Official UK Charts Company said.

Taio Cruz remained at number four with Break Your Heart, while American hip hop artist Jay-Z fell two places to number five with Empire State of Mind featuring Alicia Keys.

Michael Buble had the third new entry in the top 10 with Haven't Met You Yet.

British indie rock band Editors topped the album chart, straight in at number one with In This Light and On This Evening, while Chipmunk's collection I Am Chipmunk entered the chart at number two.

Madonna's greatest hits compilation Celebration slipped a place to number three, while Colombian star Shakira's album She Wolf came straight in at number four.

Paolo Nutini's Sunny Side Up leapt from number 31 to number five, while girl group Saturdays came in at number nine with Wordshaker.
