Cheryl Cole's solo single? It’s more than a Lil familiar

Updated 16:39pm on 21 Oct 2009

Cheryl Cole's first solo single has been accused of sounding like an old song from R 'n' B star Kelis.

Star turn: Cheryl singing on X Factor

The Girls Aloud singer's record Fight For This Love looks set to be No 1 on Sunday as it is the year's biggest-selling hit so far.

But internet music fans say the melody of the song's verse is almost identical to the 2007 Top 3 hit Lil Star, by American-born Kelis.

X Factor Blog

One, calling herself Ali1998, wrote: “It was the first thing I thought of when I heard it and ran off to play Lil Star immediately to everyone in the room.

“My daughter exclaimed, it's exactly the same!' I wonder if she realises this or it's subliminal.”

Another, Chief Wahoo, said: “I had no idea that it was even Cheryl Cole. But Lil Star by Kelis just kept going through my head.”

An anonymous poster added: “Pretty much the entire song is a re-sampled version of Lil Star, just with new lyrics and a dancey break.”

Cheryl's spokesman today defended the accusations, saying: “There are no similarities.”
Fight For This Love is the first single from her album 3 Words, out on Monday.

It was written by American Andre Merritt, who has previously worked with Rihanna. More than 15m viewers watched Cheryl performing the song on
The X Factor last Sunday.

Does anyone else think Cheryl is brutally selfish? She stole the #1 spot from the person she was supposed to be mentoring and helping in her career - Alexandra Buke!!! She released her single at the around the same time and stole her PR, limelight, and probably any chance of UK success. Everyone knows the "go-zone" for Xfactor winners is the same show 1yr later. To Cheryl, thanks for nuthin, Luv A.Burke

She is a singer and it is a song. Does it save lives or improve the world?

Does she claim it can cure cancer? Does she claim she is the new messiah?

More important things to worry about people, let'sd move along.

Chery;needs to learn how to write her own songs like Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele already do, if she wants to be taken seriously. Lip-synching and pre-recording songs on stage is the refuge of the second-rater artists

Who is buying this record, it is just appalling! Cheryl Cole should hang her head in shame at her Minnie Mouse voice and her outfit made Kandy Rain look like nuns. Paul Abdul has a great personality and she is talented - what is Simon thinking?
