A beaming Coleen Rooney leads the way as a rather nervous Wayne follows, carrying their son Kai from hospital today.

Thrilled: Coleen leaving maternity unit
Less than 19 hours after the birth at Liverpool Women's Hospital, the couple took the baby home to their £3.5m Cheshire mansion, where all preparations have been made for the new arrival.

Holding the baby: staff look on as Coleen, her mum and Wayne take Kai to a people carrier
The 24-year-old Manchester United star gripped the handles of a carrycot as nurses watched them leave. They were accompanied by 23-year-old Coleen's parents Colette and Tony McLoughlin who loaded the boot of the car with baby clothes, blue and white balloons and flowers.

Going home: hospital staff say goodbye to the Rooneys today
Among the gifts was a tiny football shirt bearing 8lb 2oz Kai Wayne Rooney's name. A spokesman for the family said: “Wayne and Coleen are thrilled with the wonderful addition to their family life.”
Wayne's grandmother Pat Morrey, 78, said: “We are all over the moon.”
Coleen opted for an NHS hospital for the birth which was induced. She checked in on Sunday and Wayne stayed at her side throughout. The baby had been due on 24 October.

Presents: Coleen has been showered with balloons and gifts
The couple have promised not to sell the rights to the first pictures of the child even though they have been offered £1m.

In fairness to the NHS - if it's your first baby and you give birth in the afternoon or early evening then they keep you in until the next day - I had my 1st baby at 5pm ish and they wouldn't let me go home until the following day. Had the 2nd one at 6pm and I was back home by about 8pm!

Congrats indeed! Boy, they kept that quiet! I don't follow the celeb world too closely, but still wasn't aware Mrs R was expecting. I hear the bidding war is in full swing now for "first photos".

Lucky Colleen - No big deal leaving 19 hours after giving birth. Us lesser mortals get chucked out sooner than that ...
