Katy Perry set the tone at the MTV Awards last night when she asked the audience: "Are you feeling sexy, Berlin?"

The singer went on to appear in a dazzling range of revealing outfits — including one claret and blue ensemble clearly dedicated to her boyfriend, West Ham supporter Russell Brand.

Corset is: one of Katy's raunchy numbers

Another nodded towards the film Cabaret, with fishnets, a purple corset top and crystal-encrusted bowler hat.

Team colours: Russell Brand was delighted with Katy Perry's choice of outfit tweeting "Wow. Now MY GIRLFRIEND has worn a West Ham Basque while hosting the EMA's. What a day!"

But she was easily matched in the glamour stakes by Beyoncé with her split-to-the-navel corset.

Beyoncé scooped a hat-trick of prizes — best female act, best song for Halo and best video for Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).

The awards were being held in the German capital to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

U2 were announced winners of Best Live Act.
Frontman Bono said: "Danke schon Berlin. Live is where this band lives. It's all that counts... If you have given us this award I guess that's what you're thinking and it means a great deal to us."

Guitarist The Edge told how 20 years ago the band were in a studio, writing the song One, "which brought us back together."

Jay-Z won the Best Urban gong.

He said: "I go to the studio just like the Jonas Brothers, just like Green Day, and we're all just artists at the end of the day."

Green Day, dressed in black, opened the ceremony with a raucous performance of their song Know Your Enemy, getting the crowd clapping above their heads.

Actress-turned-rock chick Juliette Lewis helped to present the Best Alternative gong to Placebo, who beat British hopes Muse and The Prodigy.

The night also saw performances from Jay-Z and Foo Fighters.
