Simon Cowell defends X Factor decision that led to saving Jedward

Simon Cowell has defended his controversial decision to take last night's X Factor result to deadlock — saying he expected Lucie Jones to survive.

Fickle hand of fate: a red-eyed and clearly uspet Lucie Jones leaves the X Factor studios last night with Lloyd Daniels. Lucie lost out to Jedward while Lloyd miraculously avoided the cut

The Welsh singer ended up going home after finding herself in the bottom two with twins John and Edward.

X Factor Blog: Why didn't Simon get rid of the twins when he had the chance?

Jones was gracious in defeat.

"I'm gutted, but the boys deserve to be here, they work harder than anyone," she said.

Safe: John and Edward were in the bottom two but survived

Simon had the casting vote and could have sent Jedward home. But instead he backed them, forcing a tie which meant the decision went down to the public. Many claimed Simon knew Jedward's cult fan base would save them — an accusation he denied.

Last night he said: “I didn't expect Lucie would lose. You make your decisions in the moment and I don't have strong feelings either way. If I can pick someone who can win who is in that position, then I can do the right thing. But sometimes it just feels fairer to take it to the public vote.

“It's not my fault if people in the bottom don't get enough votes. That's the way it is. It's not life or death. We have to put it into perspective. I apologise. I realised when I made the decision that it was going to cause controversy.”

Hundreds of furious viewers bombarded the X Factor website last night, accusing Simon of being a coward.

In a dig at the Grimes' debatable vocal abilities, Jones' mentor Dannii Minogue said: "I just wish all the good singers good luck in the singing competition. It shouldn't have happened."

John and Edward are now third favourites to win the X Factor.

Bookmaker Ladbrokes is now offering odds of 3/1 that the twins will win the X Factor, and 4/1 that they will sign a deal with Cowell's label Syco.

The pair began with odds of 150/1 but they are now third favourite to win the series, behind Olly Murs at 6/4 and Joe McElderry at 5/2.

David Williams, from Ladbrokes, said: "Simon's decision to save the twins must go down as one of the biggest shocks in recent telly betting history.

"He's thrown them an unlikely lifeline and given us bookies yet another week of sleepless nights. Our worst nightmares could yet come true if 'Jedward' win the show."

Jedward get a Rotten critique
Is there anyone out there who hasn't had a pop at John and Edward?

Punk legend Johnny Rotten is the latest, blasting: “They're just lazily untalented. It's not fair, it's not right and a perfectly good singer gets voted off while that dopiness gets promoted. How is that singing?” Woah!

Is`n time that lloyd gets booted out of Xfactor?. He knows he cant sing but Lucy can.Why does he not do the decent thing and give his place to Lucy.
As for the gorgeous twins JOHN & EDWARD I have nothing but admiration for them. They certainly do entertain us.They make the xfactor show. The main reason why many tune in every week.
The booing should stop.ASBO`s ought to be given to those who behave in such a disgraceful manner. Is it beccause they are Irish that they get booed?

- René, Sheffield UK

JEDWARD!!! john and edward are the best act that has ever been on the x factor.they make me laugh so much! yes, lucie should not have gone because she was a good singer, but it was right that john and edward stayed, because they are just amazing! i hate how jedward are getting such a hard time, from the press..ect and nothing bad has been said about lloyd, honestly i think jeward can sing better. lloyd is getting through every week because of his looks, but no one is complaining about that, everyone is just giving jeward a hard time. i love jeward! im going to support them all the way! please vote for them! xxxxxx

- Laura, musselburgh, scotland.

This is really the first series of the X-Factor that I've watched properly and I must say that 'Jedward' have provided me with alot of laughs over the past few weeks.
I don't have a problem with them. I do however, have a problem with Lloyd. I am completely at a loss as to why this talentless, dead behind the eyes teenager is actually in this competition.
He cannot sing, granted niether can 'Jedward' but atleast when they're on stage they provide entertainment, whereas when Lloyd has taken to the stage he looks like a lost lamb, scared to move, so awkward and uncomfortable, completely an un-natural performer. Well, that is ofcourse apart from the completely random back flip during his Sinatra cover, just what the classic song needed, some gymnastics, I'm sure if Sinatra was still alive he would be thinking "I wish I'd thought of that!".

Bring back Lucy, keep Jedward and for God's sake please get rid of that Lamb!

- David, London, England

I have been following your show religiously, however I will no longer be tuning in to this so called farce of a talent show. Lucie please go find a REAL talent agent that can make the proper decisions regarding your singing career. I cant wait to buy your first cd.Simon time to let some real judges decide the fate of upcoming talent .You have lost your edge.Lucie was the best talent on that show and you have the power to do whats right and bring her back........

- Melanie Munro, Ontario Canada

john and edward are embarrasing to the irish. i am embarrased to call myself irish. they cant sing and lucie should have stayed when she is a better singer when they are just entertainers then singers.

- Emily Dalton, coventry

Come on folks, its good TV! Jedward are awful, but they are entertaining, would love to see them get into the final 3!
Lucie, its a real shame that these youngsters are having their dreams crushed but they knew what they were in for when they applied.
Anytime voting goes to the public, the results are skewed. The judges are thinking cold hard cash here, lots of money for the program (lots of viewers love controvesy and viewing figures rise) and Simon C already knows who will sell the most records, hence he has a smile on his face each week mentoring the over 25's.
Ask yourself, would you honestly pay good money to buy an album by half of the performers..... Danyl Johnson I would.

- Carl, London

hi im charlene aged 12 from stoke on trent meir, i think that simon didnt know what to do and then let the public decide asuming that lucy would stay, but even thow im dissapointeed that lucy went im very happy that john and edward stayed because im a huge fan of them i think they bring entertainment and fun to the x factor and there performances no they havent got the best vocals but yes there the 2 most gawjuss twins iv ever seen on t.v and theyv got awsoem hair ! and i know that they will do well in the show x x x

- John And Edward Num1 Fan, stoke on trent

May I say 2 things,

Firstly, there are 6 men being brought home today in their coffins, surely that is where I support should be.

Secondly, I am seriously questioning the intelligence of some of the British public, do they not understand IT IS THE PUBLIC WHO DID NOT VOTE FOR LUCIE, MAKING HER THE ACT WITH THE LEAST VOTE, not Simon Cowell. He may be a smug egoist, but it is not his fault the publci did not vote for Lucie. Also those people complaining, did they vote for Lucie? I suspect not.

- E Sullivan, London

Cheryl must be relieved potential direct competition knocked out. If Simon may have missed a trick here he should have maintained the integrity of the show let them go, but also changed the format to give them a cabaret appearance every week for fun then launched them as the new Ant and Dec, who themselves were popular for personality not singing ability. Let them present it next year!!

- Steve, London

JOHN & EDWARD may not be the best singers BUT they certainly can entertain. Why do you think so many viewers tuned in every saturday?
Of course not to listen to the karaoke singers.
JEDWARD deserve to be in the finals.
LLoyd who cannot sing should have done the decent thing and offered his place to Lucy.
Its the public that counts and more votes were given to Jedward so what is the fuss all about?.

- René, Sheffield UK

lucy should not have been sent home she has great tallent, more than can be said for john and edward ,they are totol rubish no tallent what so ever.Simon Cowell should have given his true opinion,is his name Cowell or Coward,The sooner he gets back to voting the way he should do the better,Also louis should have had more sense having put them forward in the first place,Whalley and Cowardl Coward should be ashamed of themselves, BRING BACK LUCY. she is great

- Sue, knutsford

Simon Coward.......... the show is a complete fast the only way to show your contempt is to all vote for jedward and watch them(coward and loui) get laughed at when they try to promote the talentless fools!!!!

- Steve, England

Simon's excuse 'I expected Lucie to survive deadlock' is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. If he expected the twins to go, why didn't he just send them home, fitting his opinions over the last few weeks. As a result I think a LOT of people are going to vote JEDWARD next week and I can't wait to see Danyl kicked out by the twins. Simon is a hypocrite.
And people, please don't blame the twins, they aren't doing anything wrong. They are just enjoying themselves and try to stay in the competition. It's not their fault they are still in.. They have got fans you know...

- Olivier Baas, Netherlands

Simon has transformed his search for talented singers to supporting two vunrable irish teenagers that can not sing.
Dannii Minogue is the most professional and graceful judge. The others are cheap and nasty.
My favourite is Stacey to win, so vote for her she is amazing.
And Dannii - you should hold your head up high and be very proud, a credit to the program.

- Tom, HONG KONG

As if he did not know what way the vote was likely to go!

- Mahjong Pieces, London

Just goes to prove its all a con and fixed. Weeks ago Cowell was trying to get them out and when he has the chance he bottles it for the sake of the media and extra income. Complete travesty. As has been said before its a singing competition and not solely about entertainment (what a lame excuse). Pathetic..

- Nick, UK

Not quite sure why the judges are there to be honest, they've just sent it to "Deadlock" every single week. Seems they're only there to snipe at each other and perhaps influence the public vote rather than to actually cast any expert eye over proceedings.

- Kc, Upminster

Simon Cowell knew what he was doing he really wants those twins in the X- factor to win.
He is insulting eveyones intelligence and people should abstain from voting in the program because he did the same by abstaining with his vote.

- Carol, Essex

Every phone vote means more money for ITV and of course the production company: this is a business, everyone, not a serious talent show, and the more outraged the public feels, and the more votes are phoned in to save/sink certain contestants, the bigger the smug grin on Mr Cowell's face. Don't feel sorry for the contestants who are sent home: this isn't the first run of this series, and they should know what they are in for. If you object to it all, don't watch and certainly don't vote!

- Fran Matthews, United Kingdom

This is a singing contest, but S C only wants ratings, i think this is now a complete joke, on all those who went forward to the shows in their thousands to audition to see these silly twins, still there, when the singer Lucy is out.what a shame ,what a mistake SC you will see in the future it will come back to haunt you, as the public now know who and what you are.

- Barry Arnold, cm3 4xb

Either they should amend the rules so the act with the lowest vote goes out, or the judges need to deliberate until they reach a majority verdict - this mix and match approach doesn't work.

Simon has also told the public so many times before to not assume their favourite act will go through and to vote. Shame he didn't heed his own advice by taking the opportunity to get rid of the least talented act in the entire competition when he had the clear chance to, rather than assuming they were going out.

May be he is acting tactically, in firstly getting ride of a vastly improved and improving act in Lucie, but also not wanting to reduce the evermore offensive Louis to zero acts, knowing that he would always vote against Simon's acts. The twins also garner a huge amount of media attention... hmmm.

- Adam, London

Its pretty obvious why he saved John and Edward.... They are so much more entertaining, I do think he made the wrong decision and if was Lucie i'd be pretty pissed off but he would of lost more viewers for send Jedward home than Lucie also niether of them can win so she was gonna go anyway so Simon just left it to the public. Fair Enough!

- Steve, Shinfield, England

Lasdt Night, the X Factor became Britain's got Twerps - and not just on the performers' side of the stage. It's no longer a singing contest - we won't watch it any more and urge others to cast it to its timely ratings death too.

- Clive, London UK

goodness me people. lucie was in the bottom two! simon didn't put her there, the public did by not voting for her, presumably because she had no impact and they didn't take to her. It went to deadlock and it was the case that not only was she in the bottom two but she got LESS votes than the twins. How on earth is that Simon's fault? I think it was fantastic telly... you go simon - what a brilliant laugh.

- Amber, london, england

This programme is no longer a talent show, it is a joke. This must surely be the last series.

- Robert Henderson, Milton Keynes , Bucks

I suspect that Simon Cowell is trying to get all of the strong singers out of the competition so that the public will vote for Jamie Danyl and Olly so that he will win but i dont think it will work and that next week jedward or Danyl should totally go out. Plus i felt totally sorry for Jedward on saturday at the end of their song as they were booed so much which must be a horrible feeling even if you have thick skin like them two guys

- Elsie, norfolk england

That was the most appalling judging decision I have ever witnessed on TV. Shame on you Simon Cowell. X-factor is the one and only thing I watch on ITV all week. Stands for Irritating Tele Vision by the way.

I won't be watching, or voting again. I hope Lucy goes on to make a career in singing, and Stacey also. Best two singers in the competition.

Good bye X-factor, and good bye ITV. A total disgrace and an insult to the intelligence of the British public.

Stephen, Hertford.

- Stephen Cowley, Hertford, UK

ker ching - well done Simon - job done - aim of show to keep in papers - debate, chit chat on tube and all these comments - and despite that we feel it is all a sham and Mr C is of course manipulating so his guy wins - we will all watch next weekend and vote. ITV must be very happy bunnies - its the only show where adbreaks are back to their pre-recession length.

Next week - Lloyd and Jedward bottom two - Jedward stay in.
then.......... ah make it up yourself

- Jc, SE1

Let's face it all of the finalists on this year's show are pretty rubbish. The only one who was any good was Rachel and she got booted off. Whoever wins this year will probably go the same way as Shane Ward. The twins are dire but are trying their best, the rest of them are delusional enough to think that they are actually superstars. This has been the worst year ever in terms of talent and I agree with another reader that all of the judges put through acts who were worse than some of those they let go.

Simon Cowell is a smart guy he knows without the twins the ratings will fall but at the same time if I was in his shoes I would have done the same. He didn't care for either of the acts so he let the public decide and they decided they liked Lucie (the American teen rock chick wannabee) less. For the first time I actually want the twins to win just to get one over on all the other smug up their own derrier contestants and to show that X Factor is not a talent contest but a light entertainment show.

- Pa, London

..., and Johnny Rotten has the nerve to make a derogatory comment about Jedward's singing.... Woah!

- Mj, East Anglia

Simon, please do not blame the voters for the appalling outcome of Sunday night’s X Factor. The whole purpose of giving the judges the final vote is to prevent the wrong person being booted off where there is a clear discrepancy between the voters’ choice and the singer’s talent. Lucie is a potential star, and the purpose of X Factor is to find the next British superstar. Given the choice between Jedward and Lucie, it was clearly Lucie who should have stayed. Is Simon tactically voting off any potential competition against his team, or is he just tone deaf? Either way, he did the wrong thing on Sunday. We should now campaign to give Lucie another chance and bring her back!

- D. Miner, London, UK

Cowal must have known most of Island voted for them. Even if they did win you would never see them again. It was the same with Michel MacManus. Most of Scotland voted for her. So where is she now?

- Sylvie, Epping Essex

The program is a joke. The Twins are rubbish, talentless oddballs.
I will not be watching this anymore and if others feel the same they should also bycote this program!!!!

- Katy, Waltham Cross, Herts

How funny that johnny rotten has the nerve to criticise the twins about their singing -stick to spreading butter you muppet!!

- Ed, London

I'm more intrigued as to why Lucie was in the bottom two after such a good performance. I have a feeling it might be something to do with her 'doing a Stacey' after she'd finished her song just as Rachel had done the week before. Both of them ended up sounding false and tacky when talking to Dermott and I don't know about anyone else but I was cringing. Now both girls are out. Problem is, teenage girls do tend to pick up each other's mannerisms when spending long periods of time together and I think Stacey's unique way of speaking must be very contagious!

- B Lane, London

Sorry Simon you got this one very wrong. This is NOT Britain's got Talent.

As Dannii said the X Factor is supposed to be about quality singing.

For me it is one less program to record!

- Jay, Southend

The twins nightmare continued I can't belived I Lost my trust in this show something is behind

- Vic, London

Simon did not vote Lucie out, she got the lowest public votes. He simply let the public decide which was consistent with his actions the previous week. I will still watch the show , dont take it so seriously , it is supposed to be entertainment. Cheryl Cole's performance a few weeks back and her subsequent no 1 proves it isnt all about "the vocal" !!!

- Catherine, London

This, as with every year, shows what the X Factor is mostly about: a soap opera about ratings and sensational headlines, with real talent taking the backseat. And yes, we've had Leona Lewis -- how many other Leonas have we had in the show's history? Exactly. Anyone remember Shane Ward? Wasn't he going to be the next big thing? Yes, Alex Burke won last year and has just had a number one -- hopefully that will continue. However, every year, there are big rumdos like this one and all it does is get more interest in the show -- for the wrong reasons, or perhaps all fans of the show are simply playing into what Simon Cowell wants us to do: to have debates and be up in arms about such outcomes, and ultimately more people actually voting for the acts they really want to win. It would be interesting to find out how many of the people complaining about these outcomes actually voted for the act they like.

- Hal, London

John and Edward were hugely entertaining last night and have notably improved since the first week. They might not be the best singers but thats missing the point- since when was this a qualification to be a "pop" star. Just look at Madonna, Geri Halliwell etc etc. They burst onto the stage with huge energy, commanded the space, sang in tune and looked fantastic. I think kids will love them and buy their records and with more training they can only get better.
Lucie Jones has a brilliant voice and a bright future but I agree with Simon that she wouldn't have won. leaving it to the public vote was the most diplomatic thing to do.

- Louise, London

It's a joke.I thought it was a talent contest? These silly little boys haven't got any!
The final vote goes to the panel, Simon Coward whoops! Cowell has pulled these boys to bits, now these boys are being voted for because the public feel sorry for them.
Lucy might not be the best singer but she outweigh's these talentless boys

- Dorothy Bowman, North Yorkshire

Simon Cowell is playing God and mess around with people's lives
He is obviously envious of Dannii Minogue current success and he is playing dirty
X Factor is now officially a trash show

- F, London, UK

True X Factor Fans Unite - stop voting for Simon's acts and lets see how he decides which one to let go when they are in the bottom 2 - even better, stop voting at all and we will no longer be lining Simon's pockets !!

- Maggie, London

What a absolute disgrace, this is NO more a talent show, its all about greed and money on the backs of theses poor kids you shatter there dreams and hopes, theses two idiots prancing about on stage doing absolutly nothing ,can't sing for their supper X FACTOR HAS TAKEN A DOWNWARD TURN Simon has four faces, shame on him , i will switch of and read my Pride and Predudice on the week ends.

- Annie, croydon

What a cop out from Simon Cowell .
Could it be something to do with ratings and not talent ?
Always thought Cowells comments spot on , not now .

- Alan Baker, essex .uk

I agree with many of the comments made so far. Simon had a chance to vote the talentless twins off the show, and flunked it. After all the criticisms he had directed at them in previous weeks, by not voting them off when he had the chance showed that he cannot be trusted. The problem with the show is that the judges compete with each other and that conspires against the contestants. If the format changes where the judges truly support all acts fairly and equally maybe I'll watch again but after last night I will not be watching again. Indeed Lucy did get the lowest public vote but that isn't the point. And she demonsatrated in her after show comments that she has more integrity that Simon can ever dream of having. I am a fan of the show no more.

- Adh, Hazlemer, Bucks

It has been clear from the time that the final 12 were chosen that it is not a "singing contest," as many of those eliminated were better singers than those kept.

Also, for those who wish wish bad fortune on "Simon's acts," please be advised that they are ALL Simon's acts - he owns the show, remember?

- Mike, London

A premeditated decision to keep those calls & PR going for another week at the expense of any credibility for the show and the eventual winner who ever the producers have decided this will be.

I suspect Simon maybe the big loser here as a bunch people turn off and dont phone. I guess its not the shows integrity that matters as he chose to cancel that on Sunday ...just his wallet which we do have some say in. Besides watching something else spares us all the odiuos catty Walsh!

- Paul ., Central London

Jedward may not be as good singers as Lucie, but they were the better act for me and for the voting public who put them ahead of Lucie who came bottom.

The one that got away with it again was Lloyd. It was far more shocking that he was chosen over Rachel last week and he was the worst singer and performer by a long way this week.

Go Jedward!

- Jim, London

I solemnly declare I am going to buy Lucie Jones' album on the first day it comes out. Several copies. I am a musician myself and I am pretty sure I can recognize a pure diamond among bricks...

- Voytek Hamerlinski, King's Lynn, UK

I cannot believe that Simon could keep those dreaded twins in the competition. How can he compare their singing to the lovely voice of Lucie's. It is suppose to be a singing completion and those two cannot sing or dance - they should have gone in for Britains got Talent as a comedy duo! Lucie should still be in the competition, she has a fantastic voice and she could get into the final. Is Simon getting rid of all the competition so that one of his "over 25's" wins! His treatment of Lucie was appalling. I always liked his honesty on the contestants but I think he has gone too far this time. I will not be watching the X Factor again. I hope Lucie all the best as I am sure she can go on to better things.

- Jc, Wallingford, Oxfordshire

John & Edward are the heartbeat of X-factor, they are very entertaining and thanks to Simon for allowing the public to decide.

- Nyambura Wainaina, Colchester

Lucy should still be in the x factor, jonh and edward clearly were not the better act and should have been sent home. I have now lost interest in this program as it just feels like a fix! Won't be watching any more.

- Margaret, stoke on trent

simons a hipacret, slagging off twins then refusing to get them out wen the chance arose, lucie can sing, which proves to me the show is fixed.tell me how the twins compare to alex or leona, wot am i missing simon ???? pathetic, i hope your golden boy danyls out next week...i just cant watch the show anymore, hopefully others will follow my lead......!!!!!!

- Debbie Collis, mildenhall suffolk

Actually Simon didn't just let the public decide. He DID send Lucy home, to get things to the deadlock - he needed 2 votes against 2 to do it. He failed to make difference between high and poor quality. It is not John and Edward's fault, they do their best. but still there a clear choice about the quality. The judges compite with earch other instead of promote and help the contestants.

The other thing is Simon just before the bottom two performances clearly said they would 'forget the past' and the judgement would be made only based on the performances last night. But after they performed he failed to do so. He commented Lucy in terms of her whole being on the show. Simon failed to keep his word. This way he lost his crebility.

I am deeply disappointed and disouraged to watch the show. Not because somebody I like lost, but because of all the politics, thinking of how much money they can make on the contestants records and TV shows and all those, as Simon himself called 'mind games'. If the quality doesn't matter, what does? In my opinion the whole show lost a huge chunk of crebility last night.

- Voytek Hamerlinski, King's Lynn, UK

This years X Factor has become a complete farce; I can't watch these young talented singers being completely crushed by some members of the public that wouldn't know talent if they fell over it, not to mention the unbelievable decisions of the judges. I have been wavering over the last two weeks about whether to watch any more, I used to really enjoy it in the past - but after last nights fiasco I will definately NOT watch this programme ever again!!!

- Hd, Penrith Cumbria

Simon, you are a coward, you should have voted those two dummies off the show, you stated on several occasions that two from Dublin could not sing, they should have gone, this is a singing contest is it not????.

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED SIMON.

- Chris Mackay, oldham uk

It was tactical voting, Lucie was a threat to Simon´s acts.

- Margaret, spain

simon cowell is an idiot he only did that coz lucie is a threat to his boys she would o won. now we have to listen to the grim brothers again

- Marie Gilchristl, stranraer scotland

At a time in all our lives, when the world is in crisis, countries are bankrupted, people are out of work - it is akin to the Fall of the Roman Empire - where the Emperors gave the citizens a loaf of bread and a day at the Circus Maximus to keep them off the streets. The X-Factor has become the Bread and Circuses of our time. We love to hate the judges. We love to hate the twins. We love to hate that which we truly cannot control. Is the vote fixed? Do pop singers have to be able to siong? Are we becoming a superficial culture all about "surface and personality?" Yes, and like the Busby Berkeley all singing all dancing films of the WWII era, this type of entertainment (The X Factor) unites and divides the public. X Factor gives us a show over the weekend period. It provides a diversion from the horrors we read about in the paper and see on the news. Serious people will still go about their lives doing serious things. SIlly people will do silly things. We are still living in the free world and the X-Factor gives us all something to talk about. The twins are great to watch - Andy Warhol would have loved them. They cannot dance in time, they maybe cannot sing in tune - but neither can a lot of the big name acts that are working in the business today. 15 minutes of fame?

- Carol Reid, Cork, Ireland

I think the only muppets here are the people who waste their time and money voting on this programme. The whole thing is quite clearly a set-up with Cowell orchestrating the whole thing. Good luck to the lads.

- Dc, London

I suspect Simon decided to bring this to deadlock because of his negative comments about the twins since the start of X-factor, so it wouldn't like he was being biased if he voted them out. However, how you can compare these two prancing idiots who can't sing in tune, let alone dance in unison, with Lucie's lovely voice, is beyond me. This decision has now made a mockery of the whole programme. It's a singing contest which means you are supposed to be good at singing. I won't be watching the X factor anymore.
