Rod Stewart wears it well as he tries for another baby

Updated 09:55am on 12 Nov 2009

Singer Rod Stewart said today he has the energy to try for an eighth child to keep his wife, Penny Lancaster, happy.

Stewart, 64, already has seven children, ranging from 30-year-old Kimberly to four-year-old Alastair, but he says the time is right to try for another.

Win: Rod Stewart's new album release Soulbook and a pair of special tickets to see For one night only with Rod Stewart for ITV

He said: "She wants another child and I will more or less do anything to keep her happy."

He added: "But I would love to have another little one, I feel I've got the energy and I'm mobile and I've got the money and I've got the time to have another child - which wasn't always the case.

"Especially in the early '80s when Sean and Kimberly were born. I was very much on the road working hard. I didn't get a great deal of time to spend with them when they were Alastair's age."

Energy: Rod Stewart thinks he still has what it takes to be a new dad

Last weekend Stewart performed on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing with his wife dancing the Cha Cha Cha with professional Matthew Cutler.

He said: "She was dreadfully, dreadfully nervous. I don't think she took a breath for the whole three minutes she was out there, she came off stage and her heart was pounding."

But the hard taskmaster said he put his wife through a routine to prepare her for the live performance.

"I made her practise... I said 'You will be on for three minutes, get your stamina up' so she did a lot of running and a lot of dancing to the song back in LA and she looked great."

Stewart said his third wife "has a part in everything" he does, and that includes picking a track for his new album of American soul covers, Soulbook.

He said: "Bless her, ironically enough she chose a song called Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher... and she's six foot two."

Stewart's last albums have been covers and he admitted he has no intention of recording another album of original songs. His next projects will be a Chicago blues album with a modern twist and a country music album.

But the singer reckons his kids keep his finger on the pulse of modern music.

"My kids Sean and my daughter Ruby will come along and play something and say 'What do you think of this, Dad?' and I will say 'Oh, it's great but I heard it 20 years ago, AC/DC did it 25 years ago or Deep Purple or whatever."'

But he confessed to being a fan of indie rockers Arcade Fire and said Scottish crooner Paolo Nutini is "fantastic, a great singer in my mould".

Soulbook is out now and features duets with Smokey Robinson, Mary J Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Stevie Wonder.
