Aspiring stars are invited to follow in the footsteps of Daniel Craig, Derek Jacobi and Matt Lucas and audition for the National Youth Theatre.

Confidence: Matt Lucas and Daniel Craig were members

The organisation is calling for applicants for backstage talent as well as the actors of the future.

Matt Lucas, the actor and creator of Little Britain, encouraged applicants to come forward.

“The National Youth Theatre greatly contributed to my own love of acting. It gave me heaps of confidence and a belief in myself and my abilities,” he said.

“It's just brilliant that this innovative organisation exists and so many young people involved will get to enjoy the long-term benefits.”

Anyone between the ages of 13 and 21 is invited to apply as an actor. Courses in costume, lighting and sound, scenery, prop-making and stage management are open to those aged 16 to 21.

Everyone who applies will be seen in the first round regardless of whether they have had previous experience. Acting applicants take part in informal workshop-based auditions and technical candidates have an informal interview where they can show any previous work if they want to.

Auditions and interviews will be held all over the UK and those who succeed get to take part in summer holiday workshops which usually culminate in a show. They can also audition for further performances.

Stars who have taken part in the past include Lucas's comedy partner David Walliams, Catherine Tate, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jamie Theakston, Orlando Bloom, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley and Rosamund Pike. Not everyone in its 53-year history goes on to act. Journalists Krishnan Guru Murthy and Kate Adie and pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor were also members.

Last year's season saw the NYT visit China to sing the national anthem in the Olympic closing ceremony in Beijing. This year, members took part in ceremonies at football's Fifa Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.
