Gordon Brown named worst-dressed man of year

Updated 09:58am on 4 Jan 2010

We may only be four days into 2010, but Gordon Brown has already been named the worst-dressed man of the year.

While the Prince of Wales and even pint-sized Ronnie Corbett made it into GQ's best-dressed list, Britain's Prime Minister moved up the rankings from third worst-dressed last year to being the worst-dressed man in the 2010 poll, for being "anything but a prime example of British style".

He was joined by one of his "best friends", French president Nicolas Sarkozy, in third place, and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il (eighth).

No style: Gordon Brown

The magazine declared of heel-wearing Mr Sarkozy: "Perhaps the French president should spend less time worrying about his stature and more time worrying about his style".

The worst-dressed list also includes funnyman Russell Brand (second), London Mayor Boris Johnson (fourth) for being "Charlie Chaplin... with a touch of Laurel and Hardy, more Hardy than Laurel" and the whole of the Top Gear team (fifth).

It is completed by Britain's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan (sixth), the Match Of The Day team (seventh), Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell (ninth) and strip club boss Peter Stringfellow (10th).

Chat show host Jonathan Ross, who was the worst-dressed man of 2009, escaped the dreaded list this year.

Second place: Russell Brand

Meanwhile Mr Brown's political foe David Cameron secured a place as one of the top 10 best-dressed, in eighth place.

Others rated for their style include David Beckham and rapper Dizzee Rascal.

Roald Dahl's fictional creation Fantastic Mr Fox even made the list in fourth, with the magazine saying: "he may be voiced by George Clooney (in the recent film) but an otherwise more Anglo animal you would be hard pushed to imagine".

Robert Pattinson, the Twilight actor, tops the best-dressed list while Prince Charles falls from fifth place to 36th.

Ronnie Corbett is number 46, with fellow comic James Corden declaring: "I've never seen someone wear a polka-dot shirt, a striped tie and a pastel blazer and look immaculate". Cheryl Cole's footballer husband Ashley is a new entry at 44th.

The full list appears is in the February issue of GQ magazine out on January 7.

Maybe its not only his suit, but the sack of spuds inside it that are the problem.

Well, at least Gordon won't be claiming for Saville row suits on expenses.

As a taxpayer, I am happy to subsidise the Prime Minister if he continues wearing "George" at Asda.

Ad hominem attacks are useless and petty. Brown is a nice bloke who has been swept up in the lust for power that afflicts many otherwise decent people.

He can put this award on the wall next to his worst Chancellor and worst Prime Minister awards.

Well done Gordon Brown for your stalwart efforts to ensure that the UK doesn't suffer as much as our neighbouring countries during this worldwide economic recession. What you wear to succeed as you are doing is immaterial
