Peggy Mitchell in despair as she watches Queen Vic burn down in Eastenders
Updated 09:28am on 9 Sep 2010EastEnders stalwart Peggy Mitchell wails with horror tonight as she sees her beloved Queen Vic - and the memories of a decade and a half in Albert Square - go up in flames.
The landlady, played by Barbara Windsor, watches as her beloved boozer is engulfed in flames, marking the end of 16 years of brawls, bust-ups and barbed comments during her tenure on the show.
The inferno begins after her crack addict son Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) sets fire to the Vic, ripping the heart out of Walford.
Dramatic pictures from tonight's episode show the landlady's moment of realisation that the blaze has spread beyond her control.
As it dawns on her that Phil is trapped in the blaze, Peggy makes a desperate bid to rescue him, unaware that Stacey Branning (Lacey Turner) and her baby Lily are also stuck upstairs.
The mouthy matriarch is leaving Albert Square after 16 years in the soap, although it is unclear whether she perishes in the fire.
Show bosses remain tight-lipped as to whether anyone makes it out of the blaze alive.

oh dearie dearie me, another crisis down at the vic !!! this must be the funniest show on earth, only the english could have dreamt up such appalling plot lines. time for ole peggy mitchell to hit the dust and that rather tasty stacey slater to get stuck into another fella, maybe she should have it away with phil, must the only geeza with teeth left who has not had his wicked way with her. Or maybe stacey should move over to emmerdale which is much more fund and they should just torch the rest of this stupid programme and cast

The whole show should be torched. It's so depressing.

Why stop at the Vic, why not burn the whole square down and rid of of this constant screaming and yelling on our TV's every night. EastEnders has served it's cause, but it's woefully out of date or out of touch with the real East End.
