JK Rowling's fifth Harry Potter book has been shortlisted for the adult fiction prize at this year's WHSmith Book Awards.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix will compete with best-sellers by Ian Rankin, James Herbert and Colum McCann.

It is also up against Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night Time, a book published simultaneously for children and adults, which recently scooped the Whitbread Best Novel award.

Rowling has previously won the WHSmith Children's Book of the Year but has never been considered for the adult award before.

The WHSmith Book Awards are known as the "People's Choice" because they are decided by public vote.

Paul Burrell's tell-all book about the Princess of Wales, A Royal Duty, is in the running for best biography/autobiography, competing with Randy Taraborelli's study of Michael Jackson.

David Beckham's autobiography My Side failed to make it onto the shortlist.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on March 16 in London.

Journalist Martin Bashir headed the shortlist judging panel, which also included the Duchess of York, Linda Barker, Robson Green and Janet Street-Porter
