He's back: Macho man DCI Gene Hunt returns in Life On Mars spin-off Ashes To Ashes

DCI Gene Hunt, the magnificently macho anti-hero of the Seventies-style cop show Life On Mars is returning to our screens this week.

This time, the Bowie-inspired title is Ashes To Ashes, the decade is the Eighties and Hunt's Ford Cortina has been traded in for an Audi Quattro.

The inevitable success of the series (starring Philip Glenister, right) is bound to inspire a wave of Eighties nostalgia.

DAVID THOMAS remembers it all too clearly. But do you?
