Bearded Zac Efron mobbed by fans at Charlie St. Cloud premiere

Heartthrob Zac Efron was greeted by hordes of screaming fans tonight at the premiere of his first "dramatic" film.

The 22-year-old, who rose to fame in all-singing, all-dancing Disney franchise High School Musical, plays the title role in The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud, about a sailing whizz who loses his younger brother in a car crash.

Perhaps in a bid to shake off his squeaky-clean image, the California-born actor sported a beard - but this did not appear to put off his young, female fans, who chanted 'we want Zac' as he made his way up the pale blue carpet in London's Leicester Square.

Efron said he knew he was taking a risk with this film, which also sees him partake in a love scene with co-star Amanda Crew.

He said: "It's the first dramatic thing I've been in, the first dramatic character that I've played and I took it personally, I wanted it to come through.

"It was the sense that I could totally fail and I enjoyed taking that risk as opposed to doing something safe."

Other guests at the screening included The Inbetweeners actress Emily Atack, reality star Brigitte Nielsen, and model Danielle Lloyd and her fiance Jamie O'Hara.

The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud is out in cinemas on October 8.
