The singer shared a joke and a hug with Christina Aguilera on stage last night during the Fashion Rocks gig at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

But R&B singer Beyoncé stole the show with a revealing mini-skirt which appeared to be made from bananas as she performed alongside her boyfriend, the rapper Jay-Z.

Sir Elton, 59, is promoting his new album, The Captain And The Kid, which is due out on 19 September.

But he insists he is not in direct competition with the younger generation. "Our day in the sun has gone, as far as radio play goes," he said. "And we're okay with that."

Others who performed at the concert included Kanye West, Nelly Furtado, the Scissor Sisters and the Black Eyed Peas.

The concert will be broadcast on American television tonight to mark the start of New York's fashion week.

Music producer Timbaland, who worked with Justin Timberlake on his hit single SexyBack, said fashion was all about generating confidence. "Think about how you feel when you put on a suit," he said.

"What you put on has to make you feel sexy about yourself."
