Accompanied by her lawyer and boyfriend Joel Madden, the five-months pregnant Richie entered the same jail in Los Angeles, as friend Paris Hilton.

Petite Nicole arrived at 3:15 p.m. to be booked in for her four-day sentence.

By 4:37 p.m, she was a free woman.

According to the sheriff's statement, the current sheriff's policy is that non-violent female offenders sentenced to 30 days or less are required to be booked and released within 12 hours.

Regarding accusations that Nicole was the latest recipient of 'celebrity justice', a statement from the sheriff's office said Richie was "treated in the same manner as other inmates with a similar sentence," and her release was "based on her sentence and federal court guidelines."

"Miss Richie was cooperative during the process," the statement said.

Richie, 25, who's pregnant by Madden, pleaded guilty to the drink and drug driving charges last month.

As part of her sentence, she also agreed to serve a three-year probation term, will undergo an alcohol education programme, and was fined $2,048.

She was arrested in December 2006 after being spotted driving her black Mercedes SUV the wrong way on an L.A. freeway. She was previously convicted of DUI in June 2003.

Richie told Diane Sawyer in an interview earlier this month that going to jail was "my way of paying my dues and taking responsibility and being an adult."

She also confessed to smoking marijuana and taking Vicodin before the 2005 accident, but insists: "I don't take anything now."

Richie says her pregnancy came as a surprise and she took five tests to confirm the positive result.

She revealed: "I didn't really believe it until I heard the heartbeat."
