David Gest says Bobby Brown was Whitney's "downfall"

Whitney Houston's friend David Gest says Bobby Brown was her "downfall".

The producer - who was among the mourners at the singer's funeral on Saturday insists her descent into drug addiction stemmed from her ill-fated marriage to the New Edition star, because she had never taken illegal substances until after they wed in 1992.

David said: "She never did drugs prior to her marriage to Bobby. She was this great movie star, great beauty, this beautiful woman who people looked up to all over the world.

"Her music will stand the test of time, long after we've gone, people will sing her songs. And he was her downfall. Point blank, he was the reason."

David also revealed he cried the last time he heard Whitney - who divorced Bobby, the father of her 18-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina, in 2007 - perform because she had lost her vocal range.

During a television interview on 'BBC Breakfast', he said: "I remember the last interview I did with her was about seven months ago, she was in my 'Michael Jackson: The Life of an Icon' DVD, and I went to Copenhagen and saw her perform.

"She could not hit those notes and after the fourth song I was in tears and I do not cry.

"I went out and tried to stay and watch the show but I said to her [afterwards], 'Listen, you need to get with a vocal coach, you've got a great set of pipes but you've got to rework it.' "
