"I love Kate," said the grande dame of punk. "She is true to whatever she believes in. She is absolutely brilliant."
Brilliant she may be, presumably she was also very busy. According to the talk at the ceremony Kate, 32, who has no fewer than 14 advertising campaigns to her name this season, was shooting yet another money-spinning ad for Rimmel, which may indeed have been true earlier in the day.
However, while the great and the good of the fashion industry were at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Kate was having a night out on the town.
She started off by going to see the Michael Clark Company production at the Barbican, followed by dinner at St John restaurant in Clerkenwell. Then, after returning home, she and boyfriend Pete Doherty left with some luggage and headed off into the night.
Meanwhile the rest of the fashion industry - including the evening's host Daisy Donovan and guests including Kelly Brook and her boyfriend Billy Zane, model Laura Bailey, Christopher Bailey, Sir Philip Green, Stuart Rose, Daphne Guinness and Lady Ella Windsor - were doing their best to get on with their gala dinner without her.
Among the award winners were the London Fashion Week star Giles Deacon, who was named fashion designer of the year, Marios Schwab (best new designer) and Mulberry's Stuart Vevers (accessory designer of the year). Independent retailer b Store were awarded shop of the year. A special award for red carpet designer went to Westwood.
