Coming to a screen near you...Genesis in concert

It's not exactly rock 'n' roll but then again Genesis were never really famed for their wild image.

So perhaps it's entirely fitting that Phil Collins & Co. will be the first band to broadcast a live concert in cinemas across the UK.

Fans who were unable to get stadium tickets for the Eighties group's comeback tour this summer will instead be able to watch it on the big screen while munching on popcorn and hot dogs in a comfy seat.

Cinema chain Vue has done the groundbreaking deal with the group to broadcast its gig in Dusseldorf, Germany, simultaneously across 44 of its 58 theatres from Aberdeen to Exeter and Central London.

The deal means more than 11,000 extra fans will be able to see Genesis perform hits such as Invisible Touch, Jesus He Knows Me and I Can't Dance for between £10 and £25.

It could mean the gig has a combined audience of more than 100,000.

The cinemas will also show a pre-gig behind-the- scenes feature on the group's Turn It On Again world tour. The concert will be mixed live for cinema audiences by the band's producer Nick Davis, while microphones will be 'dotted' around the venue to give the broadcast the atmosphere of being there.

Organisers claim it is the first live broadcast from multiple UK-wide cinemas.

Genesis - comprising vocalist and drummer Phil Collins; guitarist Mike Rutherford; and Tony Banks on keyboard - announced in November that they were reforming, 15 years after their last tour.

The 'prog-rock' group's original frontman Peter Gabriel - who, like Collins, enjoyed solo success after leaving the band - will not be joining the 20-date comeback tour, which includes performances at Twickenham and Old Trafford.

The cinema deal will boost what is already likely to be a large windfall for the band.

Genesis manager Tony Smith said: "Given that many people couldn't get tickets as the shows in Twickenham and Old Trafford sold out in two hours, this gives us a unique opportunity to reach many disappointed fans through the UK."

Vue plans a programme of future live broadcasts including international football matches, major music concerts and interactive gaming exhibitions.
