Coronation Street's Beverley Callard describes terror of road rage attack

Coronation Street star Beverley Callard told a court of her "shaking fear" as she was targeted by a road rage motorist.

The 50-year-old, who plays feisty Liz McDonald in the ITV1 soap, told the Manchester Magistrates' Court how she was left terrified after a driver and his friend "played cat and mouse" with her for 10 minutes on her way into work in Manchester.

After pulling up beside her car, the driver began to follow her, cutting in front of vechile and then slamming on their brakes.

She also revealed how she feared she was going to be physically assaulted as a passenger in Imran Alam's car started throwing coins at her silver convertible.

She told the court: "They were turning round and looking at me through their rear window and laughing.

"At first I thought they had recognised me because of my job as you sometimes get people waving at you and such.

"My convertible is a hard-top so I could hear [the coins]clanking as they hit. I was really scared.

Alam - who did not attended court - was convicted on Wednesday for his role in the road rage row and chairman of the bench Hamid Pouladi said he "deliberately" tried to upset the Coronation Street star.

Mr Pouladi said: "We found Miss Callard's evidence was clear, concise and credible."

"He deliberately intimidated and endangered other drivers and drove in a way that caused Miss Callard alarm and distress."

Wearing a pin-stripe jacket, white blouse and skin-tight black suede trousers, Bev looked shaken as she walked into court to give evidence.

Prosecutor Jim Mowbray said when arrested Alam refused to identify his passenger and denied intimidating the actress - instead claiming she only brought charges because she is probably "racist".

Alam, 23, of Heaton Chapel, Stockport, in Greater Manchester, was found guilty by magistrates of a public order offence and driving without due care and attention.

A warrant was issued for him to be brought to court for sentence after he failed to turn up yesterday and magistrates were forced to carry on with the trial in his absence. No date for sentence has yet been set.

Outside court Callard declined to comment.
