Daddy's girls: Jaime and Lois Winstone upstage dad Ray at film awards

Actor Ray Winstone may be the star of the family - but his daughters may soon claim that position for themselves as the pair - both actresses - unwittingly upstaged their famous father at last night's British Independent Film Awards.

Jaime and Lois Winstone took centre-stage on the red carpet at last night's British Independent Film Awards.

And with both making a name for themselves in what's become the family business, it clearly won't be long before it will be their names, and not actor father Ray's up in lights.

Winstone senior took home the Richard Harris award for outstanding contribution to British film at the star-studded ceremony attended by Dame Juid Dench, Joely Richardson, Billy Eliot star Jamie Bell and Bond star Daniel Craig.

But as the Beowulf star attended the ceremony with his family, including wife of 28 years Elaine, it's clear that the veteran actor has been rewarded in both his personal and professional life.

However, the East End actor who made his name as a film hardman in the classic Scum showed he's still a bad boy at heart as he flouted the law by smoking indoors.

A source said: "I could smell smoke, and was surprised to turn around and see Ray crouching down, trying to hide a cigarette. He didn't fool anyone." Funnily enough, no one tried to confront him.

Ray and his family were all at the event, which took place at The Roundhouse, in Camden, London, and Jaime brought along actor boyfriend Alfie Allen, a member of another talented showbiz tribe which includes singer sister Lily and his actor father Keith Allen.

Apart from Ray's much-deserved award, last night belonged to the small-budget British film about Joy Division singer Ian Curtis which continues to scoop a host of awards.

Control, which was made for just £3 million and stars an unknown former warehouse worker in his first lead role, won five prizes at the Bifas.

The movie, which follows Curtis's tragic last years before he killed himself at the age of 23 on the eve of the band's first US tour, won Best British Independent Film.
