Devastated Mel B loses out in Dancing With The Stars finale

She was a widely tipped favourite, but Spice Girl Melanie Brown was left bitterly disappointed after she lost the final of US TV show Dancing With The Stars last night.

Scary Spice scored top marks from the judges with her final performance of the Mamba, but lost out in the viewer's vote to Brazilian racing driver Helio Castroneves.

Earlier, the Spice Girl said that to win, and to be embraced by America, would have meant "everything" to her.

Castroneves took home the mirror ball trophy in the American version of Strictly Come Dancing.

The other finalist, US singer Marie Osmond, was eliminated at the start of the show.

Mel B and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy came second overall - winning on judge's points, 85 to 84, but losing out on viewer's votes. No details of the votes, which counted for 50 per cent, were revealed.

After hearing she had lost, Mel B said she had "enjoyed all of it".

During the two-hour live final, Scary Spice had said that winning would mean "everything" to her.

"To be embraced by America, would be... I would actually be speechless.

"Me and Maks have come so far. We are not prepared to throw it all away. We have to win it for all those people that have been voting for us."

Final dance off: a night earlier, a confident Mel B scored 55 out of a possible 60 points

She went on: "I've had so much fun, everyone's so cool here. It's been an amazing journey.

"Coming in second or third is not an option for me. I like to start something and finish it right on top."

Chmerkovskiy, her dancing partner, described Mel B as "queen of the floor".

Show stopper: Mel B was widely tipped as the favourite to win

Emma Bunton said she had seen her fellow Spice Girl perform and thought she was "brilliant".

Mel B chose her favourite dance, the Mambo, for her final routine and earned a perfect 10 from all three judges.

Len Goodman, a professional ballroom judge, described her as the "most versatile dancer we've ever had on Dancing with the Stars".

He said: "You are an absolute revelation, your ballroom throughout the whole season... This mambo was incredible, fabulous."

Bruno Tonioli, a film, music, video and theatre choreographer, said: "What can I say, truly magnificent. You really have proven you're the complete dancer.

"But not only that. Your determination, your professionalism, and your good humour is a credit to you. You're a star."

And even the third judge, Carrie Ann, a choreographer and dance producer - who had said she was looking for more excitement from Mel B's Monday night performance - told her: "You danced like you were born to do this."

On Monday night, Mel B was watched from the audience by all four other Spice Girls, including Posh Spice Victoria Beckham, as she scored 55 out of a possible 60 points awarded by the judges.
