EastEnders bosses to defy smoking ban

EastEnders bosses are ready to defy the Government and allow characters in the soap to smoke on set, it is reported today.

Lighting up will be banned in all workplaces in England from 1 July.

That will include Albert Square, which is considered a BBC workplace - despite being outdoors.

The Queen Vic and the launderette where Dot Cotton works will also be off-limits as the ban covers almost all enclosed public spaces.

But a boss on the BBC soap said they would defy the ban despite the fact they could be fined £2,500 each time a character lights up, saying: "We will fight it. We have to portray real life - and people smoke."
