Defiant: EastEnders bosses say they will defy the smoking ban at the risk of £2,500 fines each time in order to portray real-life on the soap

That will include Albert Square, which is considered a BBC workplace - despite being outdoors.

The Queen Vic and the launderette where Dot Cotton works will also be off-limits as the ban covers almost all enclosed public spaces.

But a boss on the BBC soap said they would defy the ban despite the fact they could be fined £2,500 each time a character lights up, saying: "We will fight it. We have to portray real life - and people smoke."
