Fergie: 'I want to help Britney'

The Duchess of York is desperately trying to help struggling mother Britney Spears.

Sarah Ferguson went on US TV in a bid to "reach out" to Britney, saying: "I would love to talk to Britney. I really feel sorry for her. I want to tell her, 'It's OK'."

Fergie, who has gone through her own nightmare years in the public, says her heart breaks when she sees the pop superstar sinking further into trouble.

And the mum-of-two admits that watching Britney brings out her mothering instinct.

Reaching out: Sarah Ferguson says she'd love to help Britney

"I would love to talk to Britney, because she - I just want to help her," Fergie told U.S. TV.

"I really feel sorry for her. She's had a bad time and I really want to reach out to her, and I'm going to do that today."

Asked what she would say if she met Britney, the Duchess said: "'It's OK'." She explained: "If she says, 'No, I've got regrets...' [I'd just say] 'No, It's OK'. Don't let yesterday or tomorrow rob you of the present.

"It's OK right now, now let's find a solution. Let's build together and work together."

Realising how seriously she was taking the pretend conversation, she burst out laughing and told her interviewer: "Sorry, I suddenly thought you were Britney then!"

The Duchess also revealed how she makes sure her daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, realise how lucky they are compared to so many other people - a message she could just as easily remind Britney.

"My two girls, Princesses, everyone goes, 'Well it's alright for them'," Fergie said.

"No. It's very difficult. For the rest of their lives they will have the paparazzi chasing them.

"But I say to them, 'Never forget when you get out the car, people in the world aren't so lucky - they want to see you smile. They don't want to see you running away, hiding. No. Stand up, smile, and just go on with your day'."

The presenters of U.S. TV show 'In The Loop With iVillage' then gave her a belated birthday cake - making it a tiny one out of respect for the fact she is the spokesperson for Weight Watchers.
