Fiona Bruce dishes out the news...in fishnets and minidress

She stole the show on Children In Need when she wore a skimpy outfit to sing a number from the hit musical Chicago.

But, unknown to viewers watching her reading the Ten O'Clock News just minutes before, Fiona Bruce was also wearing the sexy costume then.

The BBC newsreader had only ten minutes between presenting the news and appearing on stage for her Children In Need routine on Friday night.

So, for the serious business, she decided to cover up her spangly halter-neck minidress with a demure suit and wore knee-length boots to hide her racy fishnets.

Then she raced from the newsroom to the Children In Need stage to perform her allaction number.

A BBC insider said: "She didn't really have a choice, she just had to wear the costume underneath.

"It was quite a task getting from one side of Television Centre to the other in time."

Ms Bruce's routine was one of the highlights of the six-and-a-half-hour telethon which raised more than £19million on the night.

A total of 11.3million people tuned in – 2.4million more than last year and the highest in four years.

The 28th annual fundraiser, hosted by Terry Wogan, featured music from the reunited Spice Girls, Boyzone, David Gray, Leona Lewis and Annie Lennox, while Kylie Minogue performed her new single, 2 Hearts.

Last year's event raised £18.3million on the night and more than £33million in total.
