Fiona Phillips criticises 'out of touch' Daybreak

Former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips claimed ITV1's new breakfast show Daybreak had "lost touch with its audience".

She said presenters Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley were being let down by the show's format.

Phillips was a presenter on Daybreak's forerunner GMTV for more than a decade, stepping down in 2008.

The 49-year-old presenter was a guest on Radio 2's breakfast show this morning.

Show host Richard Madeley, who was stepping in for Chris Evans, asked for her views on Daybreak, which launched in September.

She said: "I think it's lost touch with its audience, I think it doesn't know who its audience is.

"It's core audience is housewives and children and I don't think they're appealing to that audience."

Daybreak has drawn flak for its fluctuating audiences which dipped to half a million at one point, although they have since steadied to around 800,000.

Phillips added: "I love Christine and Adrian, I have to say. They're not being given the tools I think."
