For £70m, Sting puts the Police back on the beat

They may have a combined age of 173, but that didn't stop them stealing the show at the prestigious Grammy music awards.

And now, 23 years after The Police broke up, they have announced that they are to go back on the road.

Lead singer Sting has negotiated himself an astonishing £70 million deal to tour with fellow bandmates Andy Summers, 64, and Stewart Copeland, 54.

The three reunited to play at the 49th annual Grammy awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night, wowing the crowd with a rendition of their debut hit single Roxanne.

And time appeared to have been kind to them, although Sting seemed to have fared best, showing off his honed figure in a sleeveless black waistcoat and dark jeans at the age of 55.

Yesterday, the three got together again at the Whisky A Go-Go club in Hollywood to make the official announcement that they are reforming, giving fans another chance to hear such hits as Message In A Bottle, Walking On The Moon, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic and Every Breath You Take.

And it seems that Sting - who has had the most successful solo career of the three - will take a superior cut of profits from the tour, albums and associated sponsorship deals and merchandising.

As well as vetoing calls to have further new band members join them on stage and enlist the help of backing singers, it is understood that his wife Trudie Styler may also join the band to produce a film about the reunion.

The group will embark on a two-year world tour taking in America, Europe and Australasia starting in June, to coincide with an album of new material written by Sting and also a further Best Of album.

The official line is that Sting felt the time was right to reform, however sceptics are questioning his true motives.

Indeed, after admitting that Miss Styler can 'shop for Britain', some have suggested that the singer is perhaps keen to find ways to fund his wife's extravagant shopping habits.
