Gaunt taken off radio for calling guest a ‘Nazi’

Radio host Jon Gaunt has been suspended from his daily talk show after calling a London Conservative councillor a "Nazi" on air.

The TalkSport presenter was forced to apologise at the end of his show after also accusing Redbridge councillor Michael Stark of being an "ignorant pig" in a discussion over the local authority's plans to stop smokers from becoming foster parents.

During the interview on Friday, Mr Stark tried to justify the policy, which will come into force in January 2010, saying that the welfare of young children should be put ahead of the needs of foster families.

Gaunt, who has faced the Broadcasting Complaints Commission five times previously, attempted to backtrack, calling his guest "a health Nazi" and arguing that the policy would deprive children in care the opportunity of finding a foster home.

The presenter, who was himself in care as a child, said: "It's something very close to my heart. I did lose my rag with him. I wish I hadn't but I did."

Mr Stark said it was "completely inappropriate" and "dangerous" to label him a Nazi, but said he had not asked for the radio host to be suspended.
