An onlooker reportedly said: "Everyone wanted to get near George but he was far too busy snogging his girl".

The actor has also recently hit the headlines after a dramatic weight loss prompted fans to be concerned for his health.

Recent pictures of a rake-thin Clooney relaxing in just a pair of swimming shorts near his beloved villa in the Italian lakes have done little to dispel the speculation.

Clooney's publicist has more than once been forced to deny rumours that he is seriously ill.

However the actor and director, who is without doubt one of Hollywood's finest and most successful, put paid to those stories yesterday when he spoke for the first time about the real reason for his slight new appearance.

Clooney, 46, told the gathered world's media at the Venice Film Festival's press conference for his new movie 'Michael Clayton' that he is actually a new devotee of a range of faddish fitness regimes.

Speaking candidly he said,

"I do a lot of aerobics and a lot of dance; a lot of jazzercise and Bikram yoga. And I use a ButtMaster.

"But seriously, I just finished doing a movie where I did football every day with a bunch of 21-year-olds and that keeps you in shape. I highly recommend it."
