Give us a cig, Stig: Ronnie Wood takes TV's Top Gear racing test

He has famously lived his life in the fast lane.

But Ronnie Wood cut a somewhat anxious figure in a TV driving challenge.

The Rolling Stone guitarist paced up and down the trackside wearing a string of lucky charms and dragging on cigarettes before taking the wheel for tonight's Top Gear on BBC2.

He sought advice from the show's expert driver The Stig before strapping on his helmet and venturing out on to the circuit at Dunsfold, Surrey, in a £13,000 Chevrolet Lacetti car.

It was a far cry from his wild-man image revealed in his memoirs of sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll serialised in The Mail on Sunday.

But he obviously liked the change - he emerged beaming to earn a congratulatory hug from his wife Jo.

A spokeswoman for the 60-yearold star said: "Ronnie's been on tour for two years so he has driven very limited amounts.

"He's just been on planes. He was excited to go on the show but very nervous. But he did brilliantly."

Ronnie's time trial was part of Top Gear's feature Star In A Reasonably Priced Car. Viewers will see him interviewed by Jeremy Clarkson before being shown his fastest lap and ranked alongside other celebrity drivers.

A BBC spokesman said: "I can't reveal the results, but he seemed to do quite well."
