Guy Ritchie's film Revolver is a flop in the USA

If Guy Ritchie wants to be known more for his films - rather than his marriage to superstar Madonna - he may not be going quite the right way about it.

Ritchie's new movie, crime thriller Revolver, has followed in the footsteps of its UK release, and flopped at the US box office, according to reports.

Despite being re-dited for the US market, Revolver - which was orginally released in the UK in 2005 - has failed to make an impact on its release on US screens earlier this month, taking just under £40,000 ($75,000) in its first 12 days of release.

Flop star: Guy Ritchie and Madonna seen here at the premiere two weeks ago of his film Revolver which has now flopped in the USA as well as the UK

Celebrity columnist Roger Friedman wrote: "It's the same amount of money Madonna spends on, let's say, mascara.

"Revolver was re-edited for American release but couldn't find a major distributor.

"Alas, Revolver is a terrible film in its new state.

"It was roundly panned by every reviewer who had a chance to see it.

"Madonna and Ritchie attended the mostly ignored mini-premiere here in New York, but that didn't help, either. Revolver died on the vine."

He added: "Guy Ritchie may be a lovely person, for all I know, but a great director he is not.

And in a barb which will no doubt sting Guy, Friedman added: "Still, thanks to Madonna's efforts, he persists in getting work."

The film was given a limited release in the US.

Ritchie's next film is set to be heist movie RocknRolla - set in London with Russian mobsters.

Jeremy Piven, Gerard Butler and Ludacris will star.
