Heartbreak for Amy Winehouse as husband faces Christmas in jail

Amy Winehouse burst into tears in court today as her husband Blake Fielder-Civil was refused bail.

The decision came after an hour-long bail hearing held in private.

The singer smudged her traditional black eye make-up as she wiped away the tears and blew kisses at her husband, repeatedly mouthing "I love you".

Fielder-Civil shook his head and smiled sadly as he was led away.

As he stood to return to the court cells, he put his hand against the side of his face and mouthed to his wife: "I'll phone you baby."

He was appearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice for allegedly trying to bribe pub landlord James King - who he is accused of having assaulted on 20 June last year - not to give evidence against him.

Winehouse, who was sitting in the public gallery flanked by her husband's family, was wearing a short black dress, pink satin ballet pumps and her trademark beehive hairdo.

Fielder-Civil, 25, was arrested with three other men earlier this month after police were tipped off about the plot. He was dressed casually in a black T-shirt and sat with a permanent grin on his face waving at members of his family.

Being Amy Winehouse: loyal fans turned out to support the troubled singer

Looking at Winehouse he mouthed: "It's all right, I love you", and as she looked tearful he asked: "Are you OK?"

When she arrived at the court she was met by supporters wearing "Amy beehive" masks.

Fielder-Civil succeeded in having his bail application held in private to prevent his wife's financial details from being revealed to the public.

Fury: Amy couldn't contain her emotion as she faced the press yesterday

Arlette Piercy, Fielder-Civil's barrister, said: "This case has received a large amount of publicity. There are sureties proposed, also personal family details and financial details usually dealt with in chambers.

"In cases such as this where every word could be reported after the trial, personal details of the defendant's wife and family ought to be heard in chambers."

Judge David Radford said: "There are reasons for bail applications to be held in chambers but I do not know whether it is necessary for those reasons."

However, there was no opposition to the application by the prosecution and only Fielder-Civil's family were allowed into the hearing.

Pitch perfect: Amy's performance last night has received rave reviews

Fielder-Civil's arrest has been blamed for some shambolic performances from the singer who has already attempted rehab on two occasions.

At the MTV Awards she managed only the words "thank you" by way of an acceptance speech and slurred her way through her single Back to Black.

Last week Winehouse came in for sharp criticism from fans as she kicked off her UK tour in Birmingham. She dedicated her performance to Fielder-Civil and was repeatedly booed by the crowd.

Winehouse has received critical acclaim for her music but has been under intense scrutiny because of her erratic lifestyle.

Her relatives have also voiced their concerns about her health and her struggle with drugs, alcohol and bulimia.

If convicted, Fielder-Civil faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
