Heather Mills 'dumped lawyers to cut costs'

Heather Mills ditched her top-drawer lawyers because she could not afford to keep them on, it was claimed yesterday.

The estranged wife of Sir Paul McCartney has taken out hefty bank loans to pay the £1.5million her legal team has already cost her.

Now, with negotiations over her divorce settlement reaching stalemate, she is considering representing herself in court to save costs.

Heather Mills: She is planning to represent herself in court

The former model's action was said to have been triggered by the realisation she would not get a swift resolution to the wrangle.

Last month she spent eight hours in front of a High Court judge without any result.

The one-day hearing, at which her legal team was headed by Princess Diana's divorce lawyer Anthony Julius, was estimated to have cost her about £15,000.

In addition there have been months of expensive wrangling, endless meetings and legal letters ricocheting between the two parties, with Miss Mills, 39, yet to see a penny of Sir Paul's £825million fortune.

Two days ago she dumped her law firm Mishcon de Reya, whose senior consultant Mr Julius charges a reputed £500 an hour.

Initially it was thought the company had dropped her after her legal aides became frustrated with her ignoring their advice and carrying out a round of TV and magazine-interviews blaming the split for driving her to the brink of suicide.

But yesterday it was said that she parted company with the law firm for financial reasons.

Miss Mills's spokesman Michele Elyzabeth confirmed that she would be representing herself in court, adding: "It was agreed between them both that she would suspend her representation from the firm due to financial reasons and that she was perfectly capable of successfully representing herself in court, as she has done on a number of occasions regarding other matters."

A spokesman for Mishcon de Reya said: "We are no longer representing her. I cannot go into the reasons because of client confidentiality."
