How I starred in Photo Love, by Fiona Bruce

Nowadays she is one of the BBC's leading newsreaders.

But there was a time when Fiona Bruce used to communicate in speech bubbles - as a teenage model for picture romances.

The story illustrated here, which culminates in a passionate kiss, was one of several appearances she made circa 1980 for the Photo Love feature in the huge-selling teen magazine Jackie.

The 15-year-old Fiona was regularly seen agonising over boyfriends and flitting between male crushes.

In this episode, she is torn between two boys -outgoing Pete and shy Eddie. Following an emotional chat with Eddie, her character, Lorna, decides that he is indeed the one that she wants.

On tonight's BBC2 documentary Jackie Magazine: A Girl's Best Friend, Miss Bruce, now a 42-year-old mother of two, reveals that she got the job after spotting an advertisement in a newsagent's window.

"I'd been looking for a Saturday job as my mum had told me to get off my backside," she said.

"At the time, £3 an hour was riches."

She admits to choosing the boys she fancied at school to play the male roles in the series - the ones that she "wanted to snog".

Miss Bruce also complains of having to bend at the knee for the pictures because she was often taller than the young chap.

She is far from the only celebrity to have featured in teenage magazines.

Hugh Grant, George Michael, former Spandau Ballet singer Tony Hadley and comedienne Tracey Ullman graced the pages of My Guy magazine -Jackie's more risque rival - along with actor Julian Sands, former ER actress Alex Kingston and Coronation Street's Sally Whittaker.

At its peak in the 1970s, Jackie sold almost one million copies a week but it waned in popularity and folded in 1993.
