I am addicted to drugs, says George Michael

George Michael has admitted being addicted to prescription drugs, and said he believes the world would be a better place if more people smoked marijuana.

The troubled pop singer, who earlier his month pleaded guilty to driving while unfit through drugs, claimed he may quit Britain to escape media attention.

Erratic: George Michael

In a series of confessions on the Parkinson chat show, the former frontman of Wham! blamed his erratic behaviour on an attention-seeking and 'self-destructive' impulse brought on by the death of his mother a decade ago.

Explaining the cause of the recent incident where he was found slumped at the wheel of his car in London, he told host Michael Parkinson: "It involves prescribed drugs and it involves a dependency on them and the tendency to chase one drug with another because of side effects."

He added that he could not say more because legal proceedings are still going on. He is due to appear for sentence at Brent magistrates' court in North-West London on May 30.

The arrest was one of a string of bizarre episodes in recent years which have left fans worried for the 43-year-old singer. Michael once again praised the benefits of marijuana, despite its links with mental illness.

The star said: "We could sit here with any number of policemen and doctors and they would all tell you if everybody who had a dependence on alcohol changed their mind and had a dependence on weed, the world would be a much easier place to live in."
