Irish Maria solves the problem

Solving a problem like a malfunctioning Maria has given Andrew Lloyd Webber a bigger headache than he bargained for, but the cavalry arrived in the shape of Irish singer Aoife Mulholland, much to his evident relief.

Aoife lost out to Connie Fisher in the BBC show How You Solve A Problem Like Maria? But it looks like she will now have the last laugh after being drafted in to take over the title role for two performances a week in The Sound Of Music at the London Palladium.

Do-Re-Mi: Aoife Mulholland prepares to take to the stage as Maria.

Connie's run in the West End musical has been hampered by repeated bouts of illness amid rumours she may be struggling with the demands of the role.

The pair will now divide the role, with Aoife, 28, performing twice a week and Connie taking to the stage six out of the eight she had promised.

Although Aoife came fourth in the BBC talent-spotting show, the classically trained singer has enjoyed huge success including appearing temptress Roxie Hart in the West End production of the musical Chicago.
