Is Amy's detox break failing?

It was billed as a make or break holiday for Amy Winehouse and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, in their struggle to stay clean of drugs.

Sadly, being whisked away to an island in the Caribbean appears to have had a less purifying effect on the troubled singer and her beau than hoped.

Fellow guests at the five-star Jade Mountain holiday resort in St Lucia have complained of 'strange smells' emanating from the couple's suite, and hotel security are spot-searching their room on a daily basis.

With rumours abounding that the star, 23, and her husband, 25, have been taking drugs in their £1,500-a-night room, resort officials are taking no chances.

Uniformed guards with direct access to the island's police force are accompany ing housekeeping staff, looking for drugs or related paraphernalia.

It was reported that the Back To Black singer coughed up blood in her room on one occasion, refusing all offers of medical assistance.

And last week the couple, who married in secret earlier this year, appeared on the resort's black sand beach sporting fresh scars and needle marks, thought to be the result of a heroin binge.

The Camden-born star is planning to fly to America for crisis talks with her U.S. record label, amid suggestions that she is on the verge of being dropped from her multi-million-pound record deal.

Universal/Republic has issued a verbal

"clean up or clear out" warning, fearing that the singer's erratic behaviour will alienate U.S. audiences.

A source close to the singer said: "Amy's management have been driven to distraction, tearing their hair out over the past few weeks.

"One of the most incredible things about Amy's success is that she has enjoyed it on both sides of the Atlantic. Very few British artists can say that.

"Despite this, she is now within a hair's breadth of throwing it away. Americans are notoriously puritanical, especially when it comes to drugs.

"Although her UK reps have been trying to pacify their U.S. counterparts, basically it's clean up or clear out, and if she offends one more time she could be dropped within days."
