Edmondson, famous as anarchic punk Vyvyan in the hit 80s sitcom, now plays a middle-aged divorcee who moves in with his teenage kids.
The 50-year-old actor plays Vernon, who moves into the student flat following a nasty divorce, in Teenage Kicks, a comedy about growing old disgracefully.
Vernon has spent the last two decades living off his high-flying wife while spending much of his time in the pub in the drama.
Edmondson starred as one of four students sharing a house in The Young Ones, the BBC show which was credited with revolutionising British comedy.
Executive Producer Phil McIntyre said: "Ade Edmondson is one of the UK's most loved and talented comedians.
"This is a long overdue return to Young Ones madness. I am delighted to be working with Adrian and ITV on this five-star comedy mayhem."
Paul Jackson, ITV's director of entertainment and comedy, said: "From the moment I arrived in this job I have made it my mission to bring quality sitcom back to ITV, this project absolutely does that and I'm very excited about having Ade back on our screens."
