Kate Silverton's fast promotion to the BBC's 90-second news

Versatility: Kate Silverton
Rising BBC star Kate Silverton is to front the corporation's 90-second news show after Natasha Kaplinsky quit to join Channel Five.

Miss Silverton, 37, who is being groomed as Miss Kaplinsky's successor, has also been handed the task of presenting the One O'Clock News when Sophie Raworth goes on maternity leave next year.

The quick-fire daily 8pm news update, which includes a 30-second regional news opt-out, launches next week.

Critics say the bulletin will dumb down complex stories.

Miss Kaplinsky had been lined up to present it before she became Britain's highest-paid newsreader by moving to Five News in a £3million deal.

BBC bosses described Miss Silverton as having "great versatility" and believe she will be able to make the new bulletin appeal to a broad cross-section of viewers.
