Kate's date with a fashion hero

The man who invented the modern fashion industry only to die penniless has finally been honoured more than 60 years after his death.

Kate Moss, who arrived with Sir Philip Green, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer, attended a gala at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art to celebrate the work of French designer Paul Poiret.

They were joined by showbusiness stars including Renée Zellweger, Sandra Bullock, Lindsay Lohan and Jennifer Lopez.

Poiret liberated women from the corset with his designs at the turn of the 20th century, which included cloak-style coats, drop-waist chemises and loose, untailored silhouettes. He branched out into fragrances, accessories and interiors long before lifestyle branding became the norm for designers. But Poiret died penniless in 1944, having failed to turn his creative flair into the commercial success of his contemporary Coco Chanel.

The quality of the guest list for the Costume Institute's tribute to Poiret would have been impressive even if they had gathered to celebrate the work of a more familiar designer.

Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, was a guest as was Sir Mick Jagger, who was accompanied by L'Wren Scott. Also present were Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson, David Bowie and Iman, Kirsten Dunst and her boyfriend, Razorlight singer Johnny Borrell. Dunst kept her costume in spirit with Poiret's vision. In contrast to the cinched waists and plunging necklines on display Dunst wore an empire-line gown.
