Kiefer Sutherland joins the 24-hour party people to mark release from jail

Free man: Kiefer Sutherland has walked free from a Los Angeles-area jail after a 48-day sentence
Kiefer Sutherland, star of the TV drama 24, celebrated his release from jail with a 24-hour bender.

The actor was released at midnight Los Angeles time - 8am UK time yesterday - then headed straight home for a marathon drinking session with friends.

The party at his Los Angeles home was due to wind up this morning, copying the idea of Sutherland's hit TV drama in which the events of a whole series take place over one 24-hour period.

Sutherland, son of the Seventies movie star Donald, was released after 48 days of 'exemplary behaviour' during his sentence for drink-driving.

He spent his time in prison cleaning sheets, pillowcases and blankets on laundry duty, said police officer John Balian.

The officer added: "He was very humble, never complained. He didn't give us any problems."

Sutherland, who spent both Christmas and his 41st birthday behind bars, was arrested on September 25 after making an illegal U-turn in Hollywood and failing a breath test.

Prison time: The actor carried out his sentence at a prison in Glendale, California on the outskirts of Los Angeles

It was his fourth arrest for driving under the influence.

He pleaded no contest to breaking California's drink-drive limit.

Sutherland was granted a request to serve his time in suburban Glendale's city jail rather than the overcrowded LA County jail in downtown. The trade-off was that he could not shave any time off his sentence for good behaviour.

In addition, Sutherland was placed on five years' probation and fined $510 (£260), ordered to enrol in an 18-month alcohol education treatment programme and to attend six months of weekly alcohol counselling sessions.

The Canadian performer won an Emmy Award last year for his role as the terrorist-fighting agent Jack Bauer on 24.

The show averaged 13.5million U.S. viewers last season.
