The 32-year-old star agreed to wed the 34-year-old drummer after he got down on bended knee at her adoptive parents' home in St Andrews, Fife on Christmas Day.
Tunstall thought the pair were spending Christmas apart after speaking to Bullen on Christmas Eve, who claimed he was in his hometown of Norwich despite being in Edinburgh.
On Christmas morning, Tunstall opened the door to find her boyfriend waiting, who had asked the singer's parents' permission for her hand the night before.

Thrilled Tunstall gushed: "So, 11 o'clock on Christmas morning, the doorbell goes and it's Luke suited and booted. With all his bags. And a little box. Wrapped with a ribbon. He proposed.
"Being an opportunist, I obviously said Yes. It feels smashing.
"Keep an eye out for a little sparkle as I'm playing those chords."
The couple have wasted no time since the engagement and have already booked a wedding venue. They plan to the tie the knot in Scotland in September.
Tunstall said: "We're gonna do the deed way up in the wild North."
The Suddenly I See singer, whose first named is Katie, has been dating Bullen - who plays in her backing band - since 2003.
Last year, she admitted she was getting broody and couldn't wait to have children with Bullen.
She said: "My biological clock is ticking louder and I've got to start thinking seriously about having children over the next few years.
"Luke's a second spine for me. He's helped me through some tough days on the road."
Tunstall admitted the couple briefly split in 2006 after a huge row, but they couldn't stay apart for long.
The result of their split - the track Someday Soon from her third album Drastic Fantastic.
She recalled: "Luke told me to f*** off, so I did.
"Then he didn't call me for three days. I assumed it was over, so I put a letter under his door telling him it was such a lame way of finishing with someone.
"The next day, he came round to say he never intended to finish things.
"I told him it might have been a good idea to call me. He called me every day after that.
"I also got a good song out of it, so we've discussed having a few more rows."
