John Lewis reported a 129 per cent increase in the flat pumps this month compared with last August. The store said own-brand ballet shoes are selling 20 per cent better than heels. Rival Debenhams has seen sales of Faith's ballet pumps rise 14 per cent this week on the same time last August. Pippa and her sister the Duchess of Cambridge have been sporting flat shoes this summer and Victoria Beckham, the queen of high heels, was spotted in flats after hurting her back giving birth to daughter Harper last month.

Jane Winkworth, founder of ballet flats brand French Sole, said demand at her stores was at a record. She said. "It's definitely the season for ballet flats. Celebrities help. The Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa wear our shoes."
