Little Britain star David Walliams heartbroken at death of his father

Little Britain star David Walliams was devastated today after his father died of liver cancer.

Peter Williams, 71, a former London transport engineer, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease in September and died in hospital before Christmas.

Walliams, who cancelled all his plans after his father was diagnosed, is said to be heartbroken. A source close to the family said he was particularly shocked because his father, who lived in Banstead, Surrey, barely drank alcohol. which increases the risk of liver cancer.

Since his father's death, 36-yearold Walliams has spent all his spare time with his mother Kathleen, 64. The source added: "David and his sister Julie are devastated - as are all the family. But they have been a rock for Kathleen. It was their first Christmas without Peter, but they are a loving family and were all together." Walliams, who changed his name for the stage, is known for being close to his family.

When he swam the Channel for charity in July 2006 his parents cheered him on, and they both appeared with him on the Channel 4 show Friday Night Project.

Walliams also took his mother, a former laboratory technician, to the final of BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing last month.

A family source said: "The best thing is that Peter got to see David's success and was specially proud when he swam the Channel."

After his father was diagnosed, Walliams had been due to go to America to film a US version of Little Britain but the writers' strike delayed production, giving him more time with his family. He will portray comedian Frankie Howerd in a new drama this year.
