London actress Archie Panjabi puts family’s fears to rest with Emmy win

A London actress who was the sole British winner at this year's Emmys has admitted she struggled to pursue a career in acting as her family felt it a "lowly" job.

Archie Panjabi, 38, was speaking for the first time since winning an Emmy award for best supporting actress for her role in US TV series The Good Wife.

She was raised in Hendon by Indian parents, who emigrated to London in the Seventies.

She said: "We did have arguments because I wanted to go to drama school. When I was younger a friend of mine's mother said that this business was only for prostitutes. I thought, Oh my God, do I label myself as that?'

"When I started in the business in England, just getting a job was a dream. And to receive an Emmy now is just beyond my wildest dreams."

Back at the family home, her mother Padma said: "I'm so very proud. She phoned me to let me know she had won. I am so happy for her. When she was nominated she never really expected to win. It was one of her dreams to win an Emmy and I am so proud that she has achieved this."
