Mel B's marriage is a 'big mistake' says her shocked mum

Spice Girl Melanie Brown marriage to Stephen Belafonte is a "big mistake" as she is still reeling from her split with Eddie Murphy, says her mother.

Andrea Brown fears her daughter married the movie producer on the rebound and is feeling particularly vulnerable due to post-natal depression.

Belafonte is a convicted wife-beater who battered the mother of his three-year-old daughter in a "malicious and unlawful" drunken frenzy.

The singer, 32, wed the movie producer in a secret Las Vegas drive-through ceremony in June.

Melanie Brown was 'lonely and at rock bottom' says her mother who is shocked the singer married movie producer Stephen Belafonte four months after giving birth to Eddie Murphy's baby

"I was with Mel for a month before Angel was born and stayed with her two months afterwards. She was so lonely, at rock-bottom.

"She had post-natal depression and was vulnerable.

"All that with Eddie Murphy really knocked her for six, but you can't discuss it with her.

"She can't deal with it. She's trying to block it out.

"I think she's made a big mistake. How can you fall in love that quick?

"I'm desperate to speak to her. I feel like jumping on a plane and flying out to her. I'm so worried," Andrea told the Sunday Mirror.

"Melanie is not the normally the sort to be taken in by anyone, but her hormones were all over the place after the baby (Angel Iris).

"Maybe Stephen came along at just the right time and said all the right things.

"I need to speak to her, but she won't answer my calls because she knows what I'm going to say," added Andrea.

According to court papers, Belafonte, 32, was charged with battery after he attacked his common-law wife Nicole Contreras at their home in 2003.

He was spared jail but had to take part in a 'Domestic Violence Batterers' Programme'.

In an echo of Brown's law suit against Murphy over their four-month-old daughter Angel Iris, Belafonte had been ordered to take a paternity test after denying he was the father of the three-year-old girl he had with Contreras.

Belafonte had to be taken to court before paying child support to Contreras.

"I've read that he's got a conviction for assaulting his ex-girlfriend and it really worries me," Andrea added.

"I don't know whether she could be influenced by someone that much because I don't know him.

"But it's shocking to think that people who really know her do think that he has that sort of power over her," she continued.

A friend of the Spice Girl said although Brown was shocked to hear about her husband's past, she went into the relationship "with her eyes open".

The friend added: "Mel knows he's no angel."

Brown has described her husband of two months as "a rock" in her battle with Murphy over maintenance for their baby daughter, Angel Iris.

The singer lashed out at Murphy's behaviour following her announcement she was pregnant with their child - last week on the Larry King Live show.

The Hollywood actor initially questioned whether he was the baby's father at the time.

He was forced to publicly admit he was the girl's dad after taking a court-ordered paternity test.

"I think the most important thing to me is that Angel knows her dad.

"And her dad is Eddie Murphy, and she has every right to know who he is.

"I think he's been extremely disrespectful and I don't think anybody should be allowed to get away with saying what he said whilst I was pregnant...

"Even when the DNA test results were in there was still nothing further said, which I found baffling.

"After all this, and still nothing? It's unacceptable."

At the time Murphy said in a live TV interview, "I don't know whose child that is, until it comes out and has a blood test."

When King read out this statement to Brown last night, she admitted she had wanted to keep the matter private but was keen to clear her name.

"I wish we could handle it privately," Brown said.

"But when my name is thrown out there when I'm four months pregnant, with the...'is it mine, I don't know,' of course I'm going to stand up for myself."

Brown has filed a law suit against Murphy seeking to legally establish his paternity and a reasonable amount of child support.

When asked exactly what she expects from Murphy, Brown replied: "I was waiting and hoping that he would do what he said he was going to do which was take care of the situation and be responsible.

"At the end of the day the person that I fell in love with was amazing.

"The person that I know now...I'm kind of appalled."

Meanwhile a warrant has been issued for Belafonte's arrest after he bludgeoned a duck to death.

Belafonte admitted killing the mallard with a brick outside his house in the state of New Jersey, but fled to Los Angeles without paying the £300 court fine, according to The Sun.

"He will be arrested if he returns to the area," said an Ocean County court spokesperson.
