Difficulties: Melinda Messenger with husband Wayne and their children Morgan, eight, Evie, four and Flynn, six. Miss Messenger has spoken in the past about her marriage troubles
A close friend last night denied rumours that a third party was involved in the split.
The friend said: 'It's simply a case of them growing apart. They seemed to have a fairytale marriage by showbiz standards.
'But obviously there have been some difficulties with Melinda becoming such a big star and Wayne having to remain in the background.
'The split's very amicable and they want to put the needs of their children above anything else.'
Jane Brent, Miss Messenger's agent, said: 'They're having a trial separation. They request that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.'
Miss Messenger has spoken in the past of her struggle with postnatal depression and suicidal thoughts, which put a strain on her marriage.
Last year, she claimed the couple nearly spilt when the family moved from their home in Swindon, Wiltshire, so her children could attend a 'holistic' school in Berkshire.

Happier times: Miss Messenger has spoken in the past of her struggle with postnatal depression and suicidal thoughts, which put a strain on her marriage
Speaking about her recent move, she told a newspaper: 'Wayne refused to go. He wanted to leave me and I wanted to leave him.
'I can remember having this enormous fight in the car. He was pulling my hair and I was hitting him.'
She has also admitted her role as main 'breadwinner' caused resentment.
A one-time customer-services manager from Swindon, Miss Messenger first became a household name in 1997 when she appeared in a double-glazing advertisement dressed only in lacy white knickers and a bra.
She began her glamour modelling in the Daily Star, only to be poached by Sun who declared her - and her surgically enlarged DD breasts - the 'Page Three Girl for the Thrillennium'.
Since then she has forged a lucrative career as a TV presenter, appearing most recently on Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.
In 2002, she appeared on Celebrity Big Brother where she was memorably described as a 'blonde Vulcan' by fellow contestant Sue Perkins, who questioned her apparant lack of range of emotions.
