Naomi Watts welcomes baby boy

The wait is over: Naomi Watts in the final days of her pregnancy
Australian actress Naomi Watts has given birth to a healthy baby boy, her publicist has confirmed.

Alexander Pete Schreiber, the first child for the star and her partner, actor Liev Schreiber, was born Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles and weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces.

Watts' spokesperson told Us magaizine: "The parents are ecstatic, and both mom and baby are doing great."

The King Kong star held a low-key baby shower at her LA home last week, which Hollywood star Kate Hudson attended.

Rumours that the couple earlier this year were soon dispelled when it was revealed Schreiber was only joking.

During a red carpet appearance at the Tony Awards in New York - the theatre world's equivalent to the Oscars - Schreiber told 'Entertainment Tonight' that they were hitched.

He said: "We are married. You got it first. Break the story!"

However Schreiber's representative quickly denied the story, saying, "They're not married."

Watts, 38, and Schreiber, 39, who first began dating in 2005, co-starred in last year's drama The Painted Veil.
