'Not ready for my close-up': Age and a big screen finally catch up with wrinkly Michael Douglas

With his image beamed onto a giant screen at a star-studded gala in New York last night, there was nowhere left for Michael Douglas' wrinkles to hide.

The 63-year-old walked the red carpet at the Motion Pictures Annual Awards with his glamorous wife Catherine Zeta Jones, who is 25 years his junior.

But it wasn't until his address to the celebrity audience, that the full extent of his blotchy, age-wearied skin and puffy eyes were revealed.

The Oscar-winning actor has long attempted to preserve his looks with plastic surgery - he has admitted to having a facelift for his wedding seven years ago.

In April 2005, he was pictured with scars near his ears during a holiday in Barbados, but his spokesman denied surgery, insisting the star simply had benign lesions removed.

He is also rumoured to have had a tummy tuck and liposuction in recent years.

The actor was honoured at the event with a career achievement award in front of an A-list crowd.

With this year's Golden Globes ceremony cancelled due to the writers' strike, stars appeared thrilled to finally be back at a glitzy affair, with George Clooney, Kate Winslet, Glenn Close, Tim Burton, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck all turning out in style.
