Actress Lindsay checks into Promises rehabilitation centre in Malibu
Lohan's spokesperson said in a statement: "Lindsay admitted herself to an intensive medical rehabilitation facility on Memorial Day."
"Because this is a medical matter, it is our hope that the press will appreciate the seriousness of the situation and respect the privacy of Lindsay as well as the other patients receiving treatment at the facility."
The news comes after a week of heavy partying in which the 20-year-old was arrested for driving under the influence after losing control of her car near her home in California.
Just 48 hours later Lohan was caught staggering out of exclusive LA nightclub Teddy's at 4.30am, and later passed out in the back of her chauffeur-driven car.
Wearing a grey hooded jacket, Lohan was seen falling to her knees and needed the help of her driver to make it to the vehicle.

After her arrest last weekend police said they found a substance tentatively identified as "a usable amount of cocaine" in connection with the accident.
The actress was with two other people in the vehicle when her £100,000 Mercedes convertible struck a curb and shrub on Sunset Boulevard in California.
This comes as it was revealed that Lohan pulled out of filming The Edge Of Love - formerly titled The Best Time of Our Lives - at the 11th hour because she was allegedly told to take a drugs test or face being banned from the set.
Producers of the movie - now being shot in Wales with Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley - feared the actress might have had a substance abuse problem and wanted her to take a test to prove she was clean.
However, Lohan decided not to play the role of Caitlin MacNamarra, Dylan Thomas's wife, just weeks before filming started.
Sienna Miller has now taken over the role.
Lohan's estranged father Michael Lohan, 47, who recently served time in jail for assault and drink-driving, urged his daughter to turn to religion.
He said: "Lindsay has to find hope in God and put her family first, not listen to what other people say, and listen to her heart. I believe the people my daughter is hanging around with are the wrong people."
He said: "This could be a blessing. This could be the sign that gets her the help she needs."
Michael has not seen Lindsay since divorcing her manager mother, Dina Lohan, two years ago.
He said: "Maybe if Dina would tear down the wall of division in our family, maybe then we could come together and show Lindsay how both parents can help."
He added: "I hope Lindsay finally gets the help that she needs. I want her to know that her Daddy is here for her."
This is the second time Lohan has entered a treatment facility, earlier this year, the Herbie Fully Loaded star voluntarily entered rehab for 30 days.
Lindsay Lohan was replaced by Sienna Miller, who is currently filming the movie with Keira Knightley in Wales
