Billy Connolly, who first appeared on Parkinson over 30 years ago and has appeared on the programme more than any other guest, and Peter Kay - who once earned his living as the comedy warm-up act to the show - will also be interviewed by the King of Chat.

Music will be provided by Jamie Cullum, who was discovered by Parkinson, and Rod Stewart, Annie Lennox and Joe Cocker.

Although the show is technically Parkinson's penultimate broadcast, his final show will not feature any live studio guests and is instead a personal retrospective of his 40-year career.

Talking about his star-studded line-up, Parkinson said: "They are friends who have made a particular contribution to the show. They are also people of great talent and interest - and what a wonderful way to finish."

The penultimate episode of Parkinson will be aired on Saturday, December 15 on ITV1.

Scots rock: Eurthymics star Annie Lennox and veteran rocker Rod Stewart will both join Parky for his chats-show swansong
